Recent advances in cellulose-based membranes for their sensing applications

Abstract: In recent years, sensing applications have played a very important role in various fields. As a novel natural material, cellulose-based membranes with many merits can be served as all kinds of sensors. This review summarizes the recent progress of cellulose membranes as sensors, mainly focusing on their preparation processes and sensing properties. In addition, the opportunities and challenges of cellulose membrane-based sensors are also prospected. This review provides some references for the design of cellul… Show more

“…Besides recycling waste paper into low-value materials, such as newspaper and boxboard, the conversion of these wastes into high-value cellulose-based products offers more commercially attractive options. Cellulosebased membrane, which has played important roles in various applications, is known as one of such products [103].…”

“…Sensors based on cellulose, which is a well-known natural biopolymer, are of particular interest [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. The main advantages of cellulose are its availability, biodegradability, and low price [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ]. Another merit of cellulose is that it is relatively easy to process and has a high modification potential, allowing cellulose and its derivatives (film, fibers, or papers) to be endowed with new features (e.g., antibacterial, catalytic conductive, luminescent, plasmonic) [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ].…”
