Receiver function study of the crustal structure of Northeast China: Seismic evidence for a mantle upwelling beneath the eastern flank of the Songliao Basin and the Changbaishan region

Abstract: Northeast China is a unique place to study intra-plate volcanism. We analyzed P-wave receiver function data recorded by 111 permanent broadband seismic stations in Northeast China. The results show that the crustal thickness varies from 27.9 km beneath the eastern flank of the Songliao Basin to 40.7 km beneath the Great Xing'an Range region. The large depth variations of the Moho can be largely but not completely explained by surface topography. The residual Moho depth calculated based on the Airy's isostasy m… Show more

“…2011). The previous studies (Liu and Niu 2011;Gao and Li 2014;Pan et al 2014;Wei et al 2014) suggested that variations in crustal thickness apparently play an important role in controlling tectonic activity in the study region. Studies of the regional variations in crustal attenuation in Northeast China and the adjacent regions shows that the highest attenuation (low Q 0 values) is observed beneath the Songliao plain, which has thick sedimentary deposits and strong tectonic activity (Sun 2012).…”

“…The figures suggest the Changbaishan maybe a result of mantle material upwelling originated from depth near 700 km. The receiver function results shows obvious lateral variation in the upper mantle transition zone, which maybe result from mantle material upwelling (Liu and Niu 2011;Tang et al 2014). The geothermal gradient of the Songliao basin which has a high heat value, is slightly higher than that of other basins elsewhere in the world (Nie 2004).…”

“…The Tanlu Fault Zone, the main active strike-slip fault zone in eastern China, is believed to have facilitated the upwelling of asthenosphere and played an important role in the Mesozoic-Cenozoic thinning of the cratonic lithosphere (Liu & Niu, 2011;Xu et al, 2004). The central segment of the Tanlu Fault Zone in the Shandong area, hereinafter referred to as the YSFZ, is an important mobile tectonic zone in eastern China.…”
