Realization of free space optics with OFDM under atmospheric turbulence

Abstract: Free space optics (FSO) technology provides a promising solution for future broadband networks, offering high data transmission compared to RF technology. This work is focused on investigating the performance of an FSO system with OFDM and QAM. A 10 Gbps data stream is transmitted using a 4-level QAM sequence through the FSO system under different atmospheric conditions. Results indicate that the integration of SOA prolongs the maximum achievable distance with acceptable SNR to 185 km under clear weather condi… Show more

“…At receiving satellites, received signal are demodulated using photodiodes and thus original signal is recovered [4][5][6][7]. In OWC, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technology has played an vital role for it capacity in reducing multipath fading effects [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. OFDM uses subcarriers which are separated by specific frequencies of overlapping band for data transportation.…”

“…Further for orthogonal sequence, these subcarriers utilize Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) [17,18]. Thus OFDM is used for high data transmission and lower fading impacts [19][20][21]. Though the vacuum is assumed to be perfect, path loss which increases as square f the distance is huge.…”

“…Optical amplification appeals to earth-to-satellite uplinks [5][6][7][8][9]. Researchers have also investigated the utilization of FSO for ground communication systems [10][11][12][13]. As the recent data rates have shown the use of Inter-satellite communication up to several Tbps, Intersatellite wireless link requires further improvement for better utilisation.…”

“…[1] It is a cost effective, secure and rapidly deployable last mile wireless access technology which provides data rate up to tens of Gbps [2]. This technology is least effected by interference and is immune to fading which results in less power loss [3]. Despite of many advantages there are various challenges which limits the system performance.…”
