Realistic mathematics education: Mathematical reasoning and communication skills in rural contexts

Abstract: Mathematics learning has always been a problem in the world of education in Indonesia especially in the Province of Maluku, which is a thousand island area. The geographical position of Maluku, which is an area of the archipelago, is quite extensive, affecting the quality of students in mathematics. One approach that is recommended to overcome mathematical problems of rural island-based students is realistic mathematics education (RME). The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of RME on mathematical… Show more

“…Thus, RME enhanced the communication skills of the students that take part in the improvement of their computational skills. A similar result was discovered by Palinussa et al (2021), where the RME approach strengthens the students' mathematical reasoning and communication skill that helps in executing a formula for a problem. Furthermore, didactical phenomenology has a significant impact on the problemsolving process' third phase.…”

“…Jadi kemampuan memahami matematika sangat penting dalam pembelajaran matematika. Salah satu ide yang paling banyak diterima dalam pendidikan matematika adalah bahwa siswa harus memahami matematika (Palinussa et al, 2021). Keterampilan dan pemahaman benar-benar saling berhubungan (Russell et al, 2020).…”

“…Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) is an effort to help students develop their full potential through interaction with an environment that is deliberately created conducive to the learning ecosystem (Heuvel-Panhuizen, 1996;Streefland, 1991;Palinussa et al, 2021). RME stages are as follows: in preparation, the teacher prepares a real problem.…”
