Real-World Treatment Patterns and Effectiveness Outcomes in Patients with Early-Stage Triple-Negative Breast Cancer

Abstract: Background: This retrospective, observational study examined real-world treatment patterns and effectiveness outcomes in 450 patients with stage II–IIIB early-stage triple-negative breast cancer treated in the community oncology setting. Methods: Kaplan–Meier methods were used to evaluate event-free survival (EFS), time to recurrence and overall survival (OS). Cox regression models were used to evaluate predictors of EFS and OS by pathological complete response (pCR) status. Results: Among patients receiving n… Show more

“…The mean age of patients in our study was 52.2 years, and the literature data were found to be consistent. [12][13][14][15][16][17][18] Although a significant relationship was observed between age and OS in our study, no significant relationship was found in the study by Costa et al 18 The histological grade is among the best established prognostic factors for breast cancer, and the majority of patients with TNBC have a high tumor grade. 5 Consistent with the literature, the majority of patients in our cohort also had a high tumor grade and their OS was worse, again similar to that reported in the literature.…”

“…5 Consistent with the literature, the majority of patients in our cohort also had a high tumor grade and their OS was worse, again similar to that reported in the literature. [12][13][14][15][16][17][18] Only a few other smaller studies have reported that grade has no role in determining survival outcomes. 17,19 Certain studies have reported that tumor size and lymph node status are significantly associated with OS in patients with TNBC.…”

“…This is in contrast to a recent study investigating real-world treatment patterns in early-stage TNBC, which demonstrated that the majority of patients who received either neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy received an ABR. 25 In addition, the pCR rates in our study of 48.2% and 21.4% in the ASR and ABR groups respectively trend in favor of the ASR group. However, this finding was ultimately not statistically significant likely due to the small sample size of our ABR cohort.…”

“…TNBC is the most aggressive cancer among various breast cancer subtypes. Chemotherapy is the standard treatment for TNBC, but there is a poor overall survival rate and complete pathological response (pCR) 28 . However, in TNBC patients, anthracycline-based therapies showed higher pCR and overall survival.…”
