Real-time video communications over GPRS

Abstract: One of the stated aims of 3 rd Generation mobile communications systems is to provide enhanced multimedia services to the user. Such services will include an integration of video, high-quality audio and data services. This paper describes a real-time mobile video communications system which employs ETSI's GPRS mobile packet system as a mobile access medium. Subjective performance tests are carried out for the error-resilient MPEG-4 video decoder using a real-time GPRS radio access emulator.

“…From the data telecommunication point of view, one of the development challenges was to reach good video/audio quality with the limited bandwidth provided by GPRS connection [12]. A long time was necessary to find the best compromise for packet length in order to achieve the required quality/bandwidth ratio.…”

“…Figure 4 shows the resulted client HMI. One of the development challenges was to employ a low bandwidth together with a good video quality using a GPRS connection [9]. It takes a long time to select a good compromise for packet length in order to achieve the requested quality/bandwidth ratio with a low frame rate and, fixed bitrate using an H.264 encoder.…”

“…Recently, the MPEG-4 video coding standard, which features high compression rate, high interactive and objectoriented compression [6,7], has been introduced to wireless multimedia transmission [1,2]. It adopts block-matching algorithms with alpha binary plane to achieve motion estimation [3,8].…”

“…real-time video/image transmission, video-ondemand, email/ web browsing and so on. Among these, realtime video-based applications play an important role of mobile multimedia service [1,2]. However, due to the inherent data intensity of video sequence, compression techniques are required to reduce the video size.…”
