Continuous composite coiled tubing with embedded electric conductors can provide uninterrupted flow of data from downhole tools. This capability makes monitoring borehole stability throughout the entire drilling process possible, even when conventional mudpulse telemetry tools are not operating and cannot provide information in real-time.An operator faces many borehole stability problems: stuck pipe, pack-off events, lost circulation, kicks, leakoff tests, and formation integrity tests, all of which can result in periods of non-circulation. However, an operator no longer has to rely solely on surface gauges to provide downhole information to deal with these problems because downhole readings are now available. The benefits of downhole pressure and tension data throughout these problematic and routine activities provide valuable information on events during these most critical operating procedures. Consequently, corrective actions can be taken to prevent and cure borehole stability problems almost as soon as they develop. In addition, the downhole data can help reduce drilling time. The borehole is under constant scrutiny. Drilling, tripping, non-circulating, and circulating operations can be optimized while avoiding other potential problems. For example: • Swab and surge pressures can be monitored constantly while tripping without circulating. • Ledges and tight spots can be identified before they cause severe damage. • Time for leak-off test (LOT) and formationintegrity tests (FIT) can be minimized. 2 • The early indications of borehole ballooning can be identified before ballooning becomes a major borehole stability issue. • Hole Cleaning intervals can be optimized reducing drilling time This paper covers a series of examples where continuous, uninterrupted data transmission can be used to anticipate and prevent borehole stability problems and optimize the drilling procedure.

Historically well drilling operations have been based exclusively on steel pipe. Recently a drilling system that combines composite coiled tubing technology and hydraulic workover technology has been introduced. This paper examines the operating experience for the system and its implications for the future.By using composite pipe with embedded conductors, the system achieved uninterrupted real-time two-way communication with the downhole tools. This allowed a stepchange improvement in the knowledge of dynamic wellbore conditions and in the control over downhole systems. New procedures were developed to assimilate and use this increased functionality. These procedures include both geosteering and real-time system diagnostics from remote locations.Incorporating a hydraulic workover (HWO) jacking system as an integral part of the drilling unit also expanded the operating envelope and functionality of the entire drilling system. This revolutionary full-system development encountered numerous challenges, many of which are related to the unique properties of composite pipe in difficult hole conditions. The technological solutions to these challenges are examined in depth.

Recently a drilling system that combines composite coiled-tubing technology and hydraulic workover technology has been introduced. This paper examines the benefits of the combined system.A newly developed composite coiled-tubing drillstring with embedded conductors allows this revolutionary drilling system to achieve uninterrupted, real-time, two-way communication with the downhole tools. This allowed a stepchange improvement in the knowledge of dynamic wellbore conditions and in the overall control of downhole drilling assemblies and systems. Subsequently, new procedures were developed to assimilate and use this increased functionality. These procedures include both geosteering and real-time system diagnostics from remote locations.Incorporating a hydraulic workover (HWO) jacking system as an integral part of the unit expanded the operating envelope and functionality of the entire system. The HWO unit allows for jointed pipe drilling in both underbalanced and overbalanced situations. The HWO unit also serves as a platform to perform jointed pipe completions. When combined with the composite coiled-tubing drilling unit, the resultant "hybrid" drilling system greatly expands the options now available for developing hydrocarbon reserves.
