Real-time spatial compound sonography of Achilles tendon in patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia and normal physical examination

“…The main novel aspect of our study is that we used MR imaging-based fatwater separation and tendon volume to study tendon xanthomas at baseline and after treatment. Tendon volume measurement is clearly relevant given that size is a prime indicator of xanthoma severity (5,29), whereas fat-water separation enables the pathophysiology of tendon xanthomas to be studied and provides another potential measure of treatment response other than tendon size.…”

“…1). Ausschlusskriterium war neben akuten und chronischen Beschwerden von Patella-und Achillessehnen das Vorliegen von Systemerkrankungen (Hypercholesterinämie, Hyperurikämie, Kollagenosen) oder bestehende Vorerkrankungen aus dem rheumatischen Formenkreis [22,23]. Die aktuelle Einnahme von Antibiotika oder nicht steroidalen Antiphlogistika führte ebenso zum Ausschluss.…”

“…16 Another recent study showed that compound sonography is an effective tool in the assessment of Achilles tendon xanthomas in patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia and normal physical examination, providing better quality images when compared with high resolution ultrasonography. 17 A study of 125 patients (67 operative, 58 nonoperative) followed with ultrasound examined re-rupture rates when operative intervention was performed if a gap greater than 5 mm existed on ultrasound after immobilization of the ankle in maximal plantar flexion. No significant difference was found in re-rupture rates (two in nonoperative and one in operative) when this criterion was used.…”
