Abstract:Simultaneous writing and probing of photoinduced second-order susceptibility chi((2)) in an azo-dye polymer thin film is demonstrated. The method is based on the fact that tensor properties of chi((2)) provide different planes of polarization for seeding and signal second harmonics. Our technique allows the chi((2)) value to be monitored in real time, completely eliminating the distortion of optical poling that can occur in traditional probing configurations. The possibility of attaining high values of chi((2)… Show more
“…Churikov et al have shown that when the polarizations of the writing and seeding beams are not parallel or perpendicular, the seeding and signal second-harmonic beams have different linear polarizations. 12 Thus the seeding beam can be blocked by an analyzer, while part of the signal beam is transmitted and can be detected in real time. However, the technique has some drawbacks.…”
We demonstrate a simple method for monitoring all-optical poling in real time. The susceptibility pattern created by two collinear beams, a writing beam at the fundamental frequency and a seed beam at the secondharmonic frequency, is reconstructed by two-beam second-harmonic generation due to the writing beam and a non-collinear probe beam at the fundamental frequency. This leads to spatial separation of the seeding and signal beams, and allows easy detection of the signal during the seeding period. When the probe beam is sufficiently weak, it does not distort the collinear poling process. Furthermore, the method provides a significantly stronger signal than monitoring based on a probe beam alone.

“…The transition from trans to cis takes place under ultraviolet light and the reverse variation from cis to trans happens under visible light or kept in the dark [1] . And the trans isomer has an intense absorption due to π-π * transition while the cis isomer shows a weakly absorption of n-π * transition.…”

Two kinds of azo polysemicarbazides were prepared based on 3, 3'-azobis (benzoylhydrazide) (ABH) and two kinds of diisocyanates via solution polymerization. The structures were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) technique and elemental analysis. Inherent viscosities of the polymers were 0.32 and 0.29 dL/g and both could be dissolved in H 2 SO 4 and polar organic solvents. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) presented a multi-step degradation and a decomposition temperature range of 230-280 ℃. And photoisomerization of the azo polymers in solvent of N, N-dimethyl acetamide (DMAc) was confirmed by Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), suggested the isomerization appearing under the ultraviolet irradiation at 365 nm and recovering completely by visible light irradiation or kept in the dark. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of polysemicarbazides before and after soaking in bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution confirmed the biocompatibility of azo polymers.
“…After the poling process the seeding SH was cut by a color ®lter and the photoinduced v 2 ws probed by the fundamental beam. The detailed description of the experimental setup can be found elsewhere [7].…”

“…To avoid distortion of the growth curves by frequent interruption of the poling process for probing, we applied simultaneous writing and probing technique described in Ref. [7]. This method proved itself to be more accurate in comparison with traditional alternating writing and probing technique [7].…”
