Real-time earthquake monitoring for tsunami warning in the Indian Ocean and beyond

Abstract: Abstract. The M w = 9.3 Sumatra earthquake of 26 December 2004 generated a tsunami that affected the entire Indian Ocean region and caused approximately 230 000 fatalities. In the response to this tragedy the German government funded the German Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System (GITEWS) Project. The task of the GEOFON group of GFZ Potsdam was to develop and implement the seismological component. In this paper we describe the concept of the GITEWS earthquake monitoring system and report on its present sta… Show more

“…Since late 2012, following a migration to the earthquake monitoring software SeisComP3 (Hanka et al 2010; http://www.seiscomp3.org, last accessed 3 November 2014) at the SED, the peak-motion parametric data that are used as input to ShakeMap are automatically computed by the software module scwfparam ) once a new SeisComP3 earthquake origin is available. This means that all seismic stations that are used in real-time by the SED for earthquake detection, location and further characterization also now contribute to the production of SED ShakeMaps.…”

“…3. In addition most of the countries around the Indian Ocean are using SeisComp 3 (http://www.seiscomp3.org/), the seismic communication and processing software developed during the course of the GITEWS project (Hanka et al, 2010). Along with the installation of this software package an introduction and training for the users of SeisComp3 was already provided.…”

“…Real-time data transmission from the LVL to the RVL was dealt with, reliably, by SeisComP's (Hanka et al, 2010) SeedLink protocol, therefore no additional steps were taken to reinforce the existing link. We focused instead on the establishment of a direct back-up link from the monitoring network to the RVL, to secure full redundancy with respect to the LVL link.…”
