Abstract: An anomalously high valence state sometimes shows up in transition‐metal oxide compounds. In such systems, holes tend to occupy mainly the ligand p orbitals, giving rise to interesting physical properties such as superconductivity in cuprates and rich magnetic phases in ferrates.
