Readiness levels of Industry 4.0 technologies applied to aircraft manufacturing—a review, challenges and trends

Abstract: The present paper provides an overview of the state-of-the-art research, outlining the applications of the Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies on the aircraft manufacturing sector and their maturity state based on the technology readiness level (TRL) scale. A literature review has been conducted for the identification, selection, and evaluation of the published research. A total of 57 papers extracted from the two most relevant scientific databases for the area (Web of Science and Scopus), from 2010 to March 2021… Show more

“…Specifically, older individuals reported low ease of use regarding AR. This technology requires technology readiness to use mobile applications and older consumers' lack of knowledge of immersive tools, as suggested by existing studies (Hur & Lee, 2021;Laera et al, 2021;Petit et al, 2019;Serravalle et al, 2019;Zutin et al, 2022). Then, AR could discourage consumers with a low degree of readiness for technology adoption and who are rather interested in experiencing a physical "touch-based" experience.…”

“…This novel technology involves multiple senses (e.g., sight, smell, touch), becoming sometimes a very complex tool, especially for those who do not have technological abilities (Herpich et al, 2014). Technology readiness is a very important variable to enhance consumers in try-on new digital experiences and understanding the main function of these tools in terms of the benefits perceived (Hur & Lee, 2021;Laera et al, 2021;Zutin et al, 2022).…”

“…Additionally, the characteristics of the technology itself, including user-friendliness, reliability, and scalability, play a crucial role in determining its readiness for integration into training practices. Recognizing the AM traits allows for a comprehensive evaluation of technology readiness (as in [44] and [45], facilitating the selection of suitable AM technologies and maximizing their effectiveness in supporting learning and development. [46] and [44] introduce Education Readiness Levels (ERL), which aim to assess the "readiness" of the training module.…”

“…The current manufacturing companies have been heavily affected by the globalized economy, which conveys the constant pursuit of increased productivity, high-quality products, reduction of the product life cycle and the processes of digitalization [33]. The application of new technologies and usage of numerous types of sensors in different sectors of the market makes companies produce an increasing volume of data and become data companies [13].…”
