Reactive Oxygen Species Scavenging Activity of Flavone Glycosides from Melilotus neapolitana

Abstract: Abstract:One new and six known flavone glycosides were isolated from the MeOH extract of Melilotus neapolitana Ten. The new compound, identified as 7 (1) by 1D and 2D NMR techniques and mass spectra, was isolated along with kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside (2), kaempferol-3-O-glucoside (3), rutin (4), quercetin-3-O-glucoside (5), isorhamnetin-3-O-rutinoside (6), and isorhamnetin-3-O-glucoside (7). The antioxidant and radical scavenging activities of these compounds and the whole crude methanol extract were evaluated.… Show more

“…The phenolic hydroxyl moieties may easily react with O 2 − · and ·OH, reducing the accumulation of ROS (Rice-Evans et al 1996). Second, IQ is an effective antioxidant and it may inhibit MDA formation (Fiorentino et al 2007). IQ also possesses a potential chemopreventive action against liver preneoplastic lesion development (Yokohira et al 2008).…”

“…The concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and superoxide anion have been observed to increase after vincristine treatment (30,31). Furthermore, Melilotus extract has been shown to inhibit the formation of TBARS, the prooxidant H 2 O 2 and superoxide anion in a concentration-dependent manner (32,33). Therefore, the anti-allodynic activity of theoesberiven F observed in the present study may be attributed to the antioxidative effect of Melilotus extract.…”

“…Recently, we reported the phytochemical study and antioxidant activities of secondary metabolites isolated from edible (Cefarelli et al, 2006; and no-edible plants (Fiorentino, D'Abrosca, Pacifico, Iacovino, et al, 2006;Fiorentino, DellaGreca, et al, 2006;Fiorentino, D'Abrosca, Pacifico, Golino, et al, 2007).…”
