Reactions of white cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) to four different strains of turnip mosaic virus

Abstract: TuMV strains isolated in the UK, Germany, Denmark and Greece have been shown to be biologically distinct by host range studies. The effects of the four strains on symptoms, yield and storage performance of four cultivars of white cabbage were assessed in gauze house experiments. Three of the cultivars, Decema Extra, Vitala and Winter White 111, were known to have high levels of resistance to the UK strain and the fourth, cv. Polinius, is known to be highly susceptible. The resistance to the UK strain previousl… Show more

“…Break & Break (1980) studied the quantitative interaction of 23 isolates with 11 different host plants only one of which was a crucifer. Similar quantitative differences were described in different B. oleracea types by Walkey & Pink (1988). The Chinese strain identification system of Liu et al (1990b), based on cumulative data on the quantitative interaction between TuMV and six cruciferous hosts, identified seven strains, Tu 1-7.…”

“…Yield losses due to TuMV are severe and have been widely reported (Ahlawat & Chenulu, 1984 ;Walkey & Pink, 1988 ;Walsh & Tomlinson, 1985). Because of the non-persistent mode of transmission of the virus by its aphid vectors, insecticides are not very useful for control .…”

“…Host resistance, however, is thought to be the only practical and effective means of control and is widely pursued in Asian countries (Ahlawat & Chenulu, 1984 ;Green & Deng, 1985 ;Green, 1991 ;Lim et al ., 1978 ;Sheen & Wang, 1982) . However, occurrence of strains of the virus (Provvidenti, 1980 ;Green & Deng, 1985 ;Li, 1989 ;Chiu, 1988 ;Walkey & Pink, 1988 ;Yoshii, 1963) has greatly hampered such programs (Green & Deng, 1985 ;AVRDC, 1984) .…”
