Reactions of Secondary Phases with Carbon in Magnesia‐Carbon Bricks

Abstract: Despite the excellent thermochemical properties of magnesia carbon bricks, these exhibit one weak characteristic during their use: their carbothermally induced wear. Carbon has a high affinity to oxygen, which leads to a reaction between magnesia and carbon, forming gaseous products at very low oxygen partial pressures in the surrounding atmosphere. When magnesia carbon material is furthermore applied at negative pressures, the precited carbothermic reduction processes effect an internal decomposition or even … Show more

“…In general, antioxidants, including metal powders or their mixtures (Si, Al, Mg, Fe, Al-Si), [4][5][6][7][8] carbides (SiC, B 4 C, Cr 7 C 3 , Cr 3 C 2 , Al 4 O 4 C, Al 8 B 4 C 7 , Ti 3 AlC 2 ), [9][10][11][12][13][14][15] nitrides (Si 3 N 4 , AlN, BN, ZrN, Si 2 BC 3 N), 3,[16][17][18] and borides (ZrB 2 , CaB 6 ), 11 are usually selected considering the achieved balance between cost and efficiency. In the late 20th century, Yamaguchi [19][20][21][22] and other researchers [23][24][25] systematically investigated the oxidation mechanism of oxides-carbon refractories with various antioxidants. The oxidation behavior of oxide-carbon refractories is generally acknowledged as being determined by oxygen diffusion at high-temperature (>1400 • C).…”

“…6,7 The oxidation of the MgO-C refractory lining showed a strong dependence with temperature, holding temperature and experiment time. 8,9 Oxy-combustion is a favorable technology for fuel savings and a solution of many environmental problems, for example, the reduction in CO 2 and NOx emissions, and many papers published in this area [10][11][12] document its importance. Instead of air used in conventional combustion, oxy-combustion uses high purity oxygen (>95%).…”
