Reaction Rate Analyses for an Accelerator-Driven System with 14 MeV Neutrons in the Kyoto University Critical Assembly

Abstract: Neutron spectrum experiments on the Accelerator-Driven System (ADS) are conducted by combining a critical assembly of a solid-moderated and solid-reflected core with a Cockcroft-Walton-type accelerator. Neutrons (14 MeV) generated from the accelerator are injected into a subcritical system and the reaction rates are measured by the foil activation method to obtain neutronic spectrum data. The numerical calculations are executed by MCNP-4C3 with JENDL-3.3 and JENDL/D-99 libraries to evaluate the reaction rates … Show more

“…Prior to investigating the neutron spectrum at the target, among several neutronic parameters, proton irradiation experiments had been carried out by the foil activation method in the cyclotron accelerator of the Hospital East of the National Cancer Center (NCC) 9,10) in Japan. The foil activation method has been useful in briefly obtaining information on the neutron spectrum, and the validity of the methodology of measurement has been confirmed through previous studies 3,5) by analyzing the reaction rates of the ADS experiments with 14 MeV neutrons.…”

“…The Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute (KURRI) carried out a series of experiments [1][2][3][4][5] on the Accelerator-Driven System (ADS) with 14 MeV neutrons at the Kyoto University Critical Assembly (KUCA), for a future joint research plan with the Kumatori AcceleratorDriven Reactor Test Facility and Innovation Research Laboratory: Kart & Lab. “…Since the fitted Equation (11) is tied down at the origin, it is expected that the fitting may be hardly influenced by these background data. Table 5 summarizes the reactivities obtained by the beam trip experiments, where the counting for the integral of Equation (14) was terminated at 300 s after beam trip operation. As the errors of these results of the LSIKM, only the statistical uncertainties originated from the least-squares fit were employed.…”

“…A wide variety of reactor physics experiments on ADS using the pulsed spallation neutrons is now in progress [10,11]. In the preparation for connecting the proton-beam accelerator at KUCA, a series of static and kinetic experiments on ADS with pulsed 14 MeV neutrons has been conducted [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. As a basic study for on-line monitoring of the subcriticality in operation of ADS, various power spectral analyses for a subcritical reactor system driven by a pulsed 14 MeV neutron source were carried out [19].…”
