Reaction of Muskmelon Collections to Cucumber Green Mottle Mosaic Virus

Abstract: In a preliminary trial 187 collections of muskmelon comprising dessert and non‐dessert types and wild Cucumis species were screened against cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) under field conditions. Based on the reaction to CGMMV, 64 were studied further in detail. Thirteen collections were found to be resistant in two field screenings (summer and rainy seasons). Results on screening under artificial conditions against pure isolate of CGMMV indicated that Cucumis figarei, C. myriocarpus 1, C. myriocarp… Show more

“…In melon, only the accessions 'Phoot' and 'Kachri' have been reported to be resistant to CGMMV (Rajamony et al, 1990). In 'Chang Bougi' plants, the virus was detected in inoculated leaves, but systemic movement of the virus was restricted after inoculation with CGMMV-SH.…”

“…'Phoot' and 'Kachri' (var. momordica Duthle and Fueler) have been reported to be CGMMV-resistant (Rajamony et al, 1990), but these accessions show the symptomless carrier-type resistance to CGMMV. There have also been no reports of the breeding of CGMMV-resistant melon, except for one method using transformation (Kashima et al, 2004).…”

“…However, many sources of resistance have been reported from polygenic inheritance. Most of this resistance is intermediate, such as CMV resistance in cucumber (Wasuwat and Walker, 1961) and melon (Dogimont et al, 2000;Takada et al, 1979), CGMMV resistance in melon (Rajamony et al, 1990;Sugiyama and Sakata, 2007), and MYSV resistance in cucumber (Sugiyama et al, 2011). It is difficult to exclude inferior traits that may be linked to resistant genes, and it is also difficult to pyramid the genes conferring different resistances.…”

“…Melon plants of the non-dessert-type accessions 'Phoot', 'Kachri', FM1, and FM5 have been reported to be resistant to CGMMV (Rajamony et al, 1990). The resistance of these accessions to CGMMV was found to be governed by recessive polygenes.…”

“…The present investigation was carried out to determine host plant resistant and the results are reported herein. Rajamony et al, (1990) in melons with slight modification. The individual plant score was utilized to work out the 'severity index' or 'vulnerability' index so as to measure the degree of resistance.…”
