Re-Examining Embodied SO2 and CO2 Emissions in China

Abstract: CO 2 and SO 2, while having different environmental impacts, are both linked to the burning of fossil fuels. Research on joint patterns of CO 2 emissions and SO 2 emissions may provide useful information for decision-makers to reduce these emissions effectively. This study analyzes both CO 2 emissions and SO 2 emissions embodied in interprovincial trade in 2007 and 2010 using multi-regional input-output analysis. Backward and forward linkage analysis shows that Production and Supply of Electric Power and Steam… Show more

“…The exported CO 2 emissions come from a number of industrial sectors including electricity, transportation, and cement. Each of these industries represents an energy-intensive sector of the Chinese economy, which have a strong backward and forward linkage (Huang et al, 2018).…”

“…In this paper, we investigate the changes of SO 2 emissions and biodiversity impacts due to the terrestrial acidification over time between 2007, 2010, and 2012. The responsibility sharing approach, the time series, the inclusion of biodiversity impacts, and the Gini coefficient analysis differentiate this work from the few earlier studies on SO 2 emissions and interprovincial trade (Huang et al, 2018;Zhang et al, 2018aZhang et al, , 2018b.…”

“…On the other hand, the anticorrelation observed for the pair NMVOC-CO 2 , probably reflects ozone formation in the troposphere (Matthes et al 2007). The anticorrelation observed for the pair SOx-CO 2 may be related to the vehicle and industrial production technology (Huang et al 2018). Regarding the pair of CO-CO 2 , the anticorrelation observed does not come as a surprise, as CO is a product of inefficient combustion that has often been used as a tracer of CO 2 from combustion (Turnbull et al 2006).…”
