Raw Garlic Consumption and Risk of Liver Cancer: A Population-Based Case-Control Study in Eastern China

Abstract: Although the major risk factors for liver cancer have been established, preventive factors for liver cancer have not been fully explored. We evaluated the association between raw garlic consumption and liver cancer in a large population-based case-control study in Eastern China. The study was conducted in Jiangsu, China, from 2003 to 2010. A total of 2011 incident liver cancer cases and 7933 randomly selected population-controls were interviewed. Epidemiological data including raw garlic intake and other expos… Show more

“…It is worth noting that Na 2 S 2 and Na 2 S 3 are sulfane sulfur donors ( Jiang et al., 2019 ). Also, DATS and DMTS belong to sulfane sulfurs, which could also attenuate HCC tumor cell viability in the present study, consistent with the previous reports ( Weisberger and Pensky, 1957 ; Liu X. et al., 2019 ). Some researchers considered that anti-cancer effects from garlic-derived compounds were attributed to H 2 S generation.…”

“…Epidemiological evidence presents that a diet rich in Allium vegetables is significantly associated with a reduced risk of liver cancer [68]. Data shows that the consumption of raw garlic twice or more per week might be a protective factor against liver cancer [69]. Besides, garlic intake might also alleviate the side effects of various therapeutic-induced liver injuries [70].…”

“…Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) ranks fourth among the causes of cancer-related death worldwide ( 1 ), and hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the primary pathogenic factor ( 2 ). The prevalence of HCC among developing countries such as China shows an increasing trend ( 3 , 4 ). Presently, no precise indicator is available for early disease diagnosis, contributing to the dismal HCC prognostic outcome.…”
