Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices as a measure of cognitive functioning in Cerebral Palsy

Abstract: Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices is a fast, easy-to-administer test able to obtain a measure related with linguistic, visuoperceptual, and memory cognitive functioning in persons with CP despite their motor and speech disorders.

“…A cutoff of 1.5 SD was chosen to apply a consistent scale for all 6 assessments, which in previously published works have had clinical disability defined at various levels including 1, 1.5, or 2 SD from the mean. [32][33][34][35][36] We set the a priori P value to P , .05. For the t tests and x 2 tests, corrections for multiple comparisons were made by using the Holm-Bonferroni method.…”

“…The subjects underwent neurological examinations, including UPDRS‐III and PSP Rating Scale (PSPRS), for assessing motor symptoms and psychological evaluation, including Mini‐Mental State Examination (MMSE), Clinical Dementia Rating Scale (CDR), and Wechsler Memory Scale Revised Logical Memory II (WMSR LM‐II), for assessing cognitive and functional impairment, Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB) for assessing frontal dysfunction, and Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices (RCPM) for assessing nonverbal cognitive impairment. RCPM reflects receptive vocabulary and visuospatial measures, and it can reportedly be conducted for subjects with severe motor impairments . Clinical scores of PSPRS, FAB, CDR Sum of Boxes (CDR‐SOB), WMSR‐LM II, and RCPM were available in 10 (subcategory = 9), 12, 12, 9, and 11 PSP patients, respectively, and all scores except PSPRS were obtained from each of the HCs.…”

“…RCPM reflects receptive vocabulary and visuospatial measures, and it can reportedly be conducted for subjects with severe motor impairments. 21,22 Clinical scores of PSPRS, FAB, CDR Sum of Boxes (CDR-SOB), WMSR-LM II, and RCPM were available in 10 (subcategory = 9), 12, 12, 9, and 11 PSP patients, respectively, and all scores except PSPRS were obtained from each of the HCs. Subjects aged >60 years with CDR-SOB = 0 and WMSR LM-II percentile >40 were recruited as HCs.…”

“…The patient's general cognitive level was assessed with the Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices, CPM (Raven & Raven, 1986), which has been recently shown to be a valid tool in the assessment of cognitive functioning in CP (Barca, Pezzulo, et al, 2010;Pueyo, Junquè, Vendrell, Narberhaus, & Segarra, 2008a, 2008b. Test materials consist in visual patterns presented with increasing difficulty.…”
