Ratio of seeds and sodium hypochlorite solution on the germination process of papaya seeds

Abstract: -Sarcotesta, a mucilaginous layer found in papaya seeds, negatively affects the germination of papaya seeds and its removal has been manually performed. The use of sodium hypochlorite can be an alternative to manual removal of sarcotesta in papaya seeds. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different active chlorine concentrations (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8%) during 24 hours of immersion, in different proportions (10:200, 50:200, 100:200, 200:200, 300:200, 400:200, 500:200 and 600:200) of seeds n… Show more

“…Seeds of sunn hemp, sunflower, and marigold were tested for seed germination in carbaryl solution. The experiment was modified by Goswami and colleagues, Jesus and colleagues, and Khah [ 27 , 28 , 29 ]. Seeds of uniform size were surface-sterilized in 3% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) for 5 min and thoroughly soaked twice using sterilized distilled water for 4 min.…”

“…As the fruits presented a small number of seeds, more fruits in the same maturation stage were used to extract seeds to reach the required quantity for the seed physiological quality determination. After extraction and counting, seeds were washed in running water and immersed in a distilled water + sodium hypochlorite 2.5 % solution for 5 min and then rinsed in distilled water (Jesus et al 2016).…”

“…Germination percentages were higher in treatments containing NaClO. In addition to its roles in asepsis, NaClO also breaks seed dormancy (HESAMI et al, 2017) via chemical scarification (JESUS et al, 2016).…”
