Rasch Calibration and Optimal Categorization of an Instrument Measuring Women's Exercise Perseverance and Barriers

Abstract: The purposes of this study were: (a) to determine the optimal categorization of an instrument measuring women's exercise perseverance and barriers using the Rasch analysis and (b) to examine urban women's exercise perseverance and barriers. A 23-item barrier instrument with five response categories was administered to 479 women from a metropolitan area. The data analysis started from collapsing the original five adjacent categories into three and four categories and 11 sets of original and collapsed data were … Show more

“…The ordinal scale does not have same distance between a score of 1 (Never) and 2 (Rarely), and a score of 2 (Rarely) and 3 (Sometimes); which is not allowed to sum score of all item responses. The logit scores are generated through consideration of each item difficulty and the transformation of ordinal scales to interval scales (You, 2016;Zhu, Timm, & Ainsworth, 2001). …”

“…This option would consist of rewording the two items and administering it to additional subjects to see if this addresses the problem. One of the strengths of the Rasch analysis model used previously to psychometrically examine the MeBTough is that both the items and participants are placed on a common metric so that additional items could be included on the same metric at a later time (Zhu, Timm, & Ainsworth, 2001), which would allow for future DIF analyses of samples including more female athletes.…”

“…16 Some of these limitations are that the calibrations are sample dependent and item dependent and that the items and participants are placed on different scales. 17 Another common psychometric problem is the inability to critically examine the selected response categories.…”
