Rare thyroid cartilage metastases detected on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography scan

Abstract: Metastatic lesions to thyroid cartilage are very rare and can be often missed on conventional imaging. Anatomical and functional fused positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging has higher sensitivity as compared to conventional CT imaging and can thus identify such atypical sites of metastasis. Here, we present four cases of thyroid cartilage metastases detected on 18 fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT scan from carcinoma lung, breast, stomach and urinary bladder.

“…Our case presents as a solitary paravertebral mass with intense FDG uptake mimicking malignancy. Solitary paravertebral mass with intense FDG uptake should consider the possibility of liposarcoma, 4 germ cell tumor, 5 lymphoma, 6,7 Castleman disease, 8 schwannoma, 9 and extragastrointestinal stromal tumor 10 . Our case suggests that, although rare, soft tissue aneurysmal bone cyst should be regarded as a differential diagnosis of solitary paravertebral mass with intense FDG uptake.…”

“…Cutaneous metastasis of internal malignancies is rare, accounting for 0.7%-0.9% of all malignancies and less than 4% of abdominal malignancies. 1 It can be the first manifestation of an underlying malignancy in 0.8% of the cases 1 . Carcinoma of unknown primary site (CUPS) is defined as histologically confirmed metastasis in the absence of an identifiable primary tumour.…”
