Rare pulmonary primitive neuroectodermal tumor metastasizing to the right atrium: a case report

Abstract: A 28-year-old man complained of intermittent irritable dry cough for 2 months with occasional bloody sputum. Positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) suggested multiple heterogeneous soft tissue masses in the inferior lobes of both lungs, with heterogeneous increases in 18F-FDG uptake. No metabolic disorders were found in the rest of the body. CT-guided percutaneous lung puncture and biopsy and immunohistochemical study confirmed pulmonary primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET). PNET is charac… Show more

“…The most common treatment interventions in metastatic PNET were chemotherapy plan only (n = 6) [26][27][28][29][30][31] and surgical plan (tumor resection) with chemotherapy (n = 5). [32][33][34][35][36] One patient had only tumor resection, 37 one patient underwent both chemotherapy and radiotherapy, 38 and one patient was without any intervention.…”

“…To date, the 18 F-FDG PET/CT imaging features of pPNETs have only been published in case reports (18-25) (see Table 2 for a summary). A soft tissue mass with high uptake of 18 F-FDG and the SUVmax ranging from 4.36 to 17.2 is observed in most pPNET lesions (18)(19)(20)(21)(22)(23)(24). Significantly high 18 F-FDG uptake by pPNET lesions was observed in all 23 patients reported in this study.…”

“…Additionally, 18 F-FDG PET/CT can simultaneously display the metabolic rates of primary and metastatic pPNET lesions and play an important role in the efficacy evaluation and follow-up (20,21). In this study, 5 patients with pPNETs underwent 18 F-FDG PET/CT for systemic examination after surgery and/or chemoradiotherapy (between 3 months and 2 years).…”
