Rare Injuries to the Distal Tibiofibular Joint in Children

Abstract: Injuries to the distal tibiofibular junction have been very precisely described in adults including diagnosis and treatment. By comparison, only two types of epiphyseal fracture were described as the equivalent of such an injury in the growing skeleton until now: the juvenile Tillaux fracture and the lateral triplane fracture. During a five-year period (1997 - 2001) twenty children with distal tibiofibular joint injury were treated in our department. Three previously unpublished types of epiphyseal injury to t… Show more

“…Operative reduction was achieved with 1 or 2 hollow compression screw fixation. However, the traditional procedure, with an excellent rate of 80% to 95%, destroyed the blood supply, required a large incision, causing trauma, and ignored any cartilage injury (20,21). With the development of minimally invasive and precision medicine, ankle arthroscopy will be more widely used in the treatment of ankle injuries.…”

“…Существует мнение, что связочный аппарат у детей эластичный и редко подвергается серьезным повреждениям [5,13]. Однако в данных работах не производилось измерение межберцового расстояния при помощи методов ультразвуковой диагностики.…”

“…[26][27][28] Chaput's tubercle fractures and injuries to the subcortical tibial mortise are thought to be transitional injuries between Tillaux fractures and syndesmotic injury in adults. 29 The distal fibular physis is associated with Salter-Harris I fractures and closes at approximately 19 years of age. [30][31][32] In addition to several mechanisms described by Dias-Tachdjian, two-plane fractures are associated with Salter-Harris II fractures.…”
