Rare Desmoplastic Fibroma in Ramus and Mandibular Angle: Presentation of a Case Report With Review of Literature

Abstract: Desmoplastic fibroma is a rare, benign fibrous tumor of bone which is locally aggressive. The mandible is the most prevalent affected of the facial bones. Nevertheless, reports of desmoplastic fibroma affecting the mandible are seldom in the literature. It causes bone destruction and has a high tendency for local recurrence. In this case report, we report a case of desmoplastic fibroma which is located in mandibular angle and extended to coronoid process, in 20-year-old female patient. © 2019 Tehran Univ… Show more

“… 10 15 Rapid expansion and subsequent cortical perforation can also result in the initiation of new bone formation from an osteogenic layer of periosteum, producing a sunburst appearance. 6 9 11 Similarly, in the present case, bony spicules as an indicator of a periosteal reaction arising from the cortical plates of the mandible were visible, and layering bone formation in the labial cortex was also seen. Since the periosteal reaction originates from the periosteum, it may present only as fine spicules on conventional radiography in the initial stages, as seen in the present case and also in the case reported by Dalili-Kajan et al, 11 Khatib and Pogrel., 15 Said-Al-Naief et al, 16 and Shi et al 17 …”

“… 10 Diagnosis at older ages may reflect late recognition. An equal sex distribution has been reported in most studies, 3 6 11 but Wood et al 9 stated there was a female predilection (56%). The most common clinical feature of desmoplastic fibroma of the jaw bones is painless swelling; the others include facial asymmetry, tooth displacement and mobility, trismus, and pathological fractures, 3 4 6 7 12 although the latter is more common in long bones.…”
