Bacterial conjunctivitis has high impact on the health of the population, since it represents more than a third of ocular pathologies reported by health services worldwide. There is a high incidence of bacterial resistance to the antimicrobials most commonly used for the treatment of conjunctivitis. In this context, besifloxacin stands out, since it is a fluoroquinolone developed exclusively for topical ophthalmic use, presenting a low risk of developing resistance due to its reduced systemic exposure. Bausch & Lomb markets it as ophthalmic suspension, under the trade name Besivance™. Literature review on besifloxacin is presented, covering its pharmaceutical and clinical characteristics, and the analytical methods used to measure the drug in pharmaceutical products and biological samples. High performance liquid chromatography is the most used method for this purpose. A discussion on Green Chemistry is also presented, focusing the importance of the development of green analytical methods for the analysis of drugs.

Rifaximin, an oral antimicrobial, has many advantages because it is selective intestine, has minimal adverse effects and is used for the treatment of some diseases such as hepatic encephalopathy, irritable bowel syndrome, travelers' diarrhea, ulcerative colitis, Clostridium difficile and acute diarrhea. Rifaximin in the form of 200 mg tablets is commercially available. The crystalline α form is therapeutically safe and effective. In most of the official compendia, rifaximin has no monograph and in none of them is there a monograph for rifaximin tablets. The literature, however, contemplates this gap with varied methods. The literature presents some methods for evaluation of rifaximin in both biological fluid and pharmaceutical product. High performance liquid chromatography stands out for the evaluation of rifaximin. Most of the methods reported in the literature are for pharmaceuticals products. They use (1) toxic organic solvents, harmful to the operator and the environment, and/or (2) buffer solution, which has a shorter service life and requires time-consuming washes of the chromatographic system generating more waste. So, this work aims to discuss (i) properties; (ii) applications; (iii) polymorphism and (iv) analytical methods of rifaximin by the look of green chemistry. This review shows an extremely current topic of great importance to the chemical-pharmaceutical area and everything it involves, since the analytical process until the impact on the environment in which it is embedded.

Abstract:The quality of a pharmaceutical product is directly related to the health of patients. This consideration is evidenced by the results of studies of various researchers, which show that a practical and precise method of analysis can be the first step in the rational use of medicines. Most of the time, drugs and medicines even with all its importance and all its uses lack analytical methods in the literature and in most official compendia for their Quality Control. During the development of a new analytical method, as liquid chromatography, must be considered various factors, such as reliability, detection and separation of all compounds of interest, speed analysis to optimize equipment and analysts, reduced need for pretreatment of the sample, low final cost analysis when the reagents, procedures and machinery are accounted, and use of non-toxic reagents neither for the operator or for the environment, that is, environmentally friendly methods. Using techniques, green methods considered, as infrared spectrophotometric and turbidimetric methods make remediation of environmental impacts frequently observed nowadays unnecessary. The use of simple and easy methods of execution, fast, precise, accurate and environmentally friendly becomes more and more interesting for the pharmaceutical industry in Quality Control of drugs and medicines. The lack of environmental friendly methods for the analysis of pharmaceuticals with minimum generation of toxic waste and the consciousness of the analytical decisions is a gap that currently drives the research groups.
