Rapid traffic information dissemination using named data

Abstract: This paper applies the Named Data Networking (NDN) concept to vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications. Specifically, we develop a simple traffic information dissemination application based on the data naming design from our previous work and evaluate its performance through simulations. Our simulation results show that data names can greatly facilitate the forwarding process for Interest and data packets. With adequate vehicle density, data can propagate over long distances robustly at tens of kilometers per s… Show more

“…According to them, during the waiting time, each transmitting node listens to the channel: if it overhears the same packet, then the imminent transmission is canceled. The additional delay can be randomly selected in a pre-defined temporal window [11,27] or it can be related to the distance from the previous sender [8,9]. Such schemes are totally distributed and performed autonomously by vehicles and RSUs; therefore, we refer to such mechanisms as "Blind Flooding" (BF).…”

“…Therefore, the definition of the NDN forwarding techniques to retrieve content [7][8][9][10][11][12], by overhauling the functionalities of the strategy layer, is among the crucial design choices to tackle in vehicular NDN.…”

“…Interests can be broadcasted and nodes hosting the requested content can directly respond [19], [22], [23]. Overheard cached copies can satisfy requests from other nodes, but broadcast requests can trigger transmissions from multiple content sources resulting in collisions and duplicate content transmissions.…”

“…To this regard, the ICN data-oriented approach appeals to the Internet of Things (IoT) domain as the perfect glue for internetworking the IoT islands. Nevertheless previous research works have just showcased the feasibility of adopting ICN for some specific IoT scenarios, e.g., BASs [5,6], MANETs [7,8], vehicular networks [9,10] and sink-centric WSNs [11][12][13]. Each of those attempts relies on ad-hoc assumptions and none of them identify a common set of services that an ICN layer should expose to the IoT's layer-2 technologies.…”
