Rapid Surveillance for Vector Presence (RSVP): Development of a novel system for detecting Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus

Abstract: BackgroundThe globally important Zika, dengue and chikungunya viruses are primarily transmitted by the invasive mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. In Australia, there is an increasing risk that these species may invade highly urbanized regions and trigger outbreaks. We describe the development of a Rapid Surveillance for Vector Presence (RSVP) system to expedite presence- absence surveys for both species.Methodology/Principal findingsWe developed a methodology that uses molecular assays to efficie… Show more

“…New surveillance and control measures introduced in recent years may influence how a similar response would be approached under current circumstances. The use of molecular testing and subsequent expenses for adult/larval/egg collections (Montgomery et al 2017) may be a quick, easier, and cheaper surveillance tool, especially for larval presence, by taking water samples in rainwater tanks, other receptacles, and storm water drain systems. If the incursion had not been eliminated, Ae.…”

“…Citizen science is also an alternative [44]. The Zika Mozzie Seeker programme in Queensland relies on citizens to obtain Aedes eggs using ovitraps [45]. The ovistrips are then posted to a laboratory for PCR analysis.…”
