A technique has been developed enabling carbon quantification of samples containing combustible carbon. Briefly, the technique consists of sample combustion in a bomb calorimeter to convert sample carbon to C0 2 followed by quantification of total gas volume and the proportion of gas volume as C0 2 . Gas laws are used to convert collected data into milligrams of carbon contained per gram of sample combusted. Carbon recovery for benzoic acid, glutamine, phenylalanine, cystine, and palmitic acid standards averaged 100.4 ± .006%. A data acquisition system and applications to poultry studies involving carbon balance are discussed. (
