Rapid fabrication of robust and bright colloidal amorphous arrays on textiles

Abstract: Angle-independent colloidal amorphous arrays (CAA) have attracted considerable research interest because of their fantastic advantages, such as being low-cost, noniridescent, and fadeless. However, the color of CAA coating is usually dim because of the incoherent scattering of latex spheres in the CAA coating. Moreover, weak interactive forces among the latex spheres in CAA coating lead to the mechanical strength of CAA being poor. This study proposes a low-cost and effective strategy to fabricate a high mecha… Show more

“…Recently, some approaches have been applied to color fabrics with structural color materials. Among them, the most commonly applied method is forming a close-packed photonic crystal (PC) structure or an amorphous photonic structure (APS) on the surface of fabrics using polystyrene (PS), SiO 2 , and other low-refractive-index spheres ( n < 1.6) as a building block. Large-area structural colored fabrics were prepared by assembling PS spheres into ordered PCs on the surface of fabrics .…”

“…46,47 Shi et al prepared dopamine prepolymer, which was used to coat the fabrics and infiltrate into the voids of assembled colloidal spheres, and the obtained PDA successfully improved the color visibility (Figure 3 (d)). 48 Yavuz et al used a disperse dye, C.I. Disperse Red 343, to modify poly(styrene-methyl methacrylateacrylic acid) (P(St-MMA-AA)) spheres, and then assembled them on the polyamide fabrics dyed by the same disperse dye to endow the fabrics with highsaturation structural colors.…”

“…Dyeing using structural colors is also performed using the adhesive properties of PDA. Shi and coworkers reported the creation of a structurally colored fabric by coating cotton fabric with monodisperse polymer particles with carboxyl groups and pre-PDA [ 101 ]. The resulting fabric retained its original structural color even after 10 washes or heating to 100°C.…”
