Rapid analysis of 56 pesticide residues in natural medicines by GC/MS with negative chemical ionization

Abstract: Many methods for determining pesticide residues in food have been reported. Although natural medicines should be confirmed to be as safe as food, few methods for determining pesticide residues in natural medicines have been reported. In this study, 56 pesticides were detected in natural medicines with a simple, rapid sample preparation method. This study indicates that the proposed method is useful for analyzing pesticides in natural medicines.

“…Consequently, few ions with high abundance are usually observed in the relevant mass spectrum resulting in improved sensitivity. NCI was recently used for the analysis of 56 multiclass pesticides (Tagami et al, 2008) as well as in 10 pyrethoids residues (Tagami et al, 2006) and 10 OCs (Guo et al, 2010) in herbal medicines. The advent of MS has opened new perspectives in order to increase the scope of targeted analytes and reliability of the findings.…”

“…The analytical strategy coupling ion-molecule reactions with GC-MS is an alternative means for qualitative and quantitative analysis of organic compounds especially in complex matrices, enhancing the sensitivity and specificity of determination [35][36][37][38][39]. Recently, selective determination of pyridine alkaloids in tobacco was achieved by using PFTBA ions/analyte molecule reaction/ionization with ion trap mass spectrometry (ITMS) [33].…”

“…6) We also diluted working standard solutions with extracts of natural medicines. 3,4) When working standard solutions were diluted with extracts of natural medicines, the recovery rates were satisfactory (Table 7). It is believed that diluting working standard solutions with extracts of natural medicines overcomes the matrix enhancement effect.…”

“…Sample Preparation --The sample preparation method was based on the previous reports. 4,5) The proposed method involves acetonitrile extraction, 4) activated charcoal cleanup, 5) and florisil clean-up. 5) Natural medicines were crushed, 10 g was weighed out, and 80, 400, and 2000 µl of spiking solution (each pesticide, 0.4, 2, 10 µg) was added.…”
