Ranking of phasor measurement units based on control strategy for small-signal stability

Abstract: Summary This paper presents a methodology to rank phasor measurement unit (PMU) locations based on small‐signal stability. In the proposed scheme, integer linear programming is utilized to identify the optimal locations of PMUs. These locations are ranked using analytical hierarchy process. Modal analysis is conducted to identify inter‐area modes leading to instability. A control scheme is proposed, to nullify this instability. Based on the control scheme, few critical buses are determined, which are given the… Show more

“…The communications system asynchronous problem must be considered in the establishment of the regional backup protection scheme. 18,19 To tackle these problems, a regional backup protection algorithm based on the adaptive current protection suiting factor is proposed in this paper. Regional backup protection refers to an intelligent protection scheme for regional power grid [20][21][22] that takes a certain number of closely related substations as a region, where the protection devices are connected with one another through communication channels to realize information sharing.…”

“…Besides, the time delay of Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU)‐based wide‐area information is unavoidable; thus, information synchronization cannot be guaranteed. The communications system asynchronous problem must be considered in the establishment of the regional backup protection scheme . To tackle these problems, a regional backup protection algorithm based on the adaptive current protection suiting factor is proposed in this paper.…”

“…Local modes, in the other hand, are localized in small regions of the system (local to a generator and to the buses connected to this generator), which make an optimal placement of PMUs through the network a critical issue. PMUs optimal placement problem considering dynamic system stability behavior is presented in previous works . The methodology presented in these papers is not systematic, cannot be extended to other networks easily, and does not take into consideration the eventuality of a loss of a PMU signal or the topology changes due to lines tripping.…”

“…Stability criterion in Kumar et al, security criterion based on N − k redundancy in Nikkhah et al, observability during cascaded outages, and observability under various contingencies have been the objective function of several OPPs. Moreover, some advantages of PMUs in controlling the system in contingencies are investigated in the literature …”
