Resumo Esta pesquisa avalia o impacto do Projeto Hora de Plantar sobre a sustentabilidade agrícola dos agricultores familiares de milho híbrido da Microrregião do Cariri mediante a construção de um Índice de Sustentabilidade da Produção (ISP), composto pelas dimensões econômica, ambiental e tecnológica. Utilizaram-se dados de origem primária, obtidos mediante 210 questionários semiestruturados, sendo 90 para produtores beneficiários e 120 para não beneficiários do programa. A comparação entre grupo tratamento (beneficiários) e controle (não beneficiários) foi realizada por meio da aplicação da técnica de Propensity Score Matching com balanceamento por entropia. Os resultados revelam que o Índice de Sustentabilidade da Produção entre os beneficiários é significativamente superior ao dos não beneficiários. Em relação aos componentes do ISP, os beneficiários apresentaram superioridade estatisticamente significativa nos índices das dimensões econômica e tecnológica, porém os dois grupos de agricultores apresentaram estimativas não estatisticamente significantes para a dimensão ambiental. Ademais, recomenda-se a ampliação dos serviços de assistência técnica e extensão rural visando estimular a adoção de práticas agrícolas sustentáveis.

Assessing the Sustainability of Horticultural Farms in Central Senegal: An Adaptation of the IDEA Method

This paper evaluates the sustainability of the different forms of horticulture farms (individual and collective) in the Groundnut Basin of Senegal using an adapted version of the IDEA method to the Senegal context. Results show that collective farms have higher sustainability scores than individual farms. Also, collective farms are more sustainable in the agroecological scale while individual farms are more sustainable in the economic scale. Results also suggest that although IDEA can be adapted to both individual and collective horticulture farms of Senegal, there is a need to include a fourth scale that will integrate the institutional and organizational features of collective farms as well as the socio-political and research JOURNAL OF AGRICULTURE AND SUSTAINABILITY 2 context that can enable or hinder the adoption of sustainable farm practices.

Climate change, recurrent economic and financial crises and food security issues are forcing society to look at the increasingly widespread use of “sustainable” production practices. These are often translated into innovations for businesses that are not always easily achievable other than through specific investments. This work sets out to assess the sustainability performance of organic farms, which represent a sustainable production model in terms of values, standards, practices and knowledge on the ground. The research was carried out in two geographical contexts (the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Sicily, Italy) which have certain environmental and socio-economic issues in common, particularly in productive sectors representative of organic agriculture. This was done with the help of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture Systems (SAFA, in the rest of the text) framework and social network analysis to study the sustainability performance of organic farms within non-structured local production systems in the form of formal enterprise networks that, on the contrary, operate with a recognized and common aim. The results demonstrate both their attainment of excellence and the existence of criticalities, thus, identifying routes to possible improvement.
