Abstract. Fair and safe allocation of natural resources for the Euro-Mediterranean area, especially for semi-arid regions, strongly relies on the adoption of WEFE (Water Energy Food Ecosystem) Nexus strategies. Transitioning to WEFE Nexus requires novel quantifiable assessment for interlinked analysis of the four WEFE sectors. Several indicator-based tools exist for agricultural sustainability at the farm scale. This contribution investigates on the application of such tools in relation for WEFE Nexus approaches. The IDEA method was selected for extending its applicability as a novel WEFE Nexus indicator toolkit and the following challenges are identified: (1) some WEFE aspects need to be reinforced in order to expand the scope beyond the actual agro-ecological focus; (2) the application at the farm scale needs to be articulated with larger scales where the WEFE Nexus displays emerging consistencies; (3) Nexus interactions, trade-offs and synergies could be further accounted for. These three challenges help identify how the IDEA indicator-based tool could be adapted to assimilate the WEFE Nexus approach, and so to allow applications in new agro-hydrological contexts.

Consolidating the peace process in Colombian territory requires determining the relevance of the agricultural and livestock production systems promoted by national and international organisms as an economic alternative in the reincorporation of Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) ex-combatants. Such is the case with the systems proposed in the Nueva Colombia (New Colombia) farm, located in the Pondores area of the Fonseca municipality in La Guajira, Colombia. In order to answer the question “Are the production systems of the Nueva Colombia farm sustainable?”, we carried out a qualitative agroecological assessment of five systems used (maize [Zea mays L.], cassava [Manihot esculenta Crantz], plantain [Musa x paradisiaca L. var. Hartón], cattle ranching, and poultry farming). Producers, technical consultants, and researchers participated in the assessment, with the goal of establishing a viability baseline and criteria to determine the convenience of allocating resources for the continuity of the systems. The results show that the Nueva Colombia farm is located in a very dry tropical forest life zone. The assessment shows moderate sustainability for plantain and cassava crops and weak sustainability for maize. As for the animal production systems, it was found that cattle ranching is not a sustainable system and that, therefore, its operation is not viable, while poultry farming is moderately sustainable. We concluded that it is not advisable to continue cattle production, and that the resources should be reallocated towards improving the poultry farming system. The agricultural systems require the implementation of practices that increase the specific and spatial diversity of crops, as well as their stress tolerance and the proportion of organic matter in soil.

En producción de banano, Colombia ocupa el cuarto lugar a nivel mundial. Los ingresos de esta producción representan más del 14 % del total de las exportaciones agrícolas colombianas en 2019. Su producción se concentra en las cooperativas agrarias de los departamentos de Antioquia (41,1 %) y del Magdalena (14,6 %). Este sector productivo es un fuerte generador de empleo y desarrollo de estos departamentos a través de la economía social y solidaria a través de una fuerte presencia de asociaciones, fundaciones, corporaciones y cooperativas. Sin embargo, este sector presenta cuatro problemáticas. La primera es el alto riesgo climático, pues los fuertes vientos ocasionan la caída de las plantas. La segunda problemática son los bajos márgenes de utilidad, la tercera problemática se relaciona con las enfermedades de las plantas el Fusarium Raza 4, la Sigatoka negra, el Maduraviche o Moko y la pudrición de corona. Finalmente, la cuarta se refiere a la escasez de mano de obra. Este artículo propone el estado del arte de los métodos de sostenibilidad de los sistemas agrícolas con el fin de identificar aquel que pueda ser utilizado en el sector bananero en el departamento del Magdalena.
