Range expansion of Kuhl’s Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus kuhlii) into Belarus

Abstract: Distribution and Abundance of the European Mole (Talpa europaea L.) in the Northern Part of the Donetsk Region.-Skubak, E.-Field studies on the European mole's distribution in the northern part of the Donetsk region were conducted. Censuses were held on two regular routes during 2006-2016. The European mole is a sporadic and not abundant species in the studied area. Its population is stable and not threatened. Disjunctions of its range within the region are found. The population of the European mole is indigen… Show more

“…The data obtained over the past few years allow stating that the whole territory of Belarus belongs to the wintering range of this species. Hibernation of V. murinus in Belarus is described in detail in our previous article (Shpak, 2016). Vespertilio murinus is the apparent dominant among our finds (70.3 % of the total number of registrations), of which 3 concerned colonies and 73 were single individuals.…”

“…Currently, the species has reached the latitude of 50° and was reported from Slovakia (Ceeľuch and Ševčík, 2006;Danko, 2007), the Czech Republic (Reiter et al, 2007), and Poland (Sachnowicz et al, 2006). Additionally, the active dispersal was recorded in Ukraine (Kedrov and Shurshak, 1999;Godlevsky et al, 2000;Poluda and Zagorodnyuk, 2001;Gavris' and Kotserzhinskaya, 2002;Zagorodnyuk and Reznik, 2007;Gashchak et al, 2009;Godlevs'ka, 2015), Belarus (Demyanchik, 2013;Shpak and Larchenko, 2016), and Central Asia (Strelkov, 2004).…”

“…Despite the spotlight recently put on the Kuhl's pipistrelle (Smirnov and Vekhnik, 2011;Godlevs'ka, 2015;Shpak and Larchenko, 2016;Ancillotto et al, 2016;Sachnowicz et al, 2017), the parasitic fauna and pathogens associated with the species are considered in scattered fragmentary communications from various (primarily, African, Asian, and South European) parts of the range. As for Russia, five or six species of ectoparasites were described earlier.…”

“…Throughout the 2000s P. k. lepidus continued its westward range expansion across the entirety of Ukraine and could be found as far west as Poland (Sachanowicz et al 2009). This range expansion is still ongoing and the 2010s have seen this subspecies move northward, and it can now be found in every part of Ukraine, on over half the territory of Belarus and in European Russia as far north as Moscow Shpak & Larchenko 2016;Sachanowicz et al 2017). Meanwhile in Central Europe P. k. lepidus has reached as far west as Poland and Slovakia (Sachanowicz et al 2017).…”
