“…After its fi rst occurrence in the Mediterranean it became one of the most common Lessepsian species in the Levantine basin and has showed expansion reaching the northern parts of the Aegean and Adriatic seas and west to Spanish coast (Katsanevakis and Tsiamis 2009). Milazzo et al (2012), Ben Souissi et al (2014, and Kara et al (2015) provided further evidence of its occurrence along north-African coasts. In addition to the above-mentioned records, Katsanevakis et al (2014a) reported a single specimen from north-western Mediterranean over muddy bottoms in the Ibiza channel, Spain and they confi rmed its entry into the western basin of the Mediterranean.…”

“…However, their presence in the Mediterranean is new, and they have been spreading rapidly through the Mediterranean in the last few decades (Kosker et al ., 2018b). For example, Lagocephalus sceleratus was first reported in Turkish waters in 2003 (Akyol et al ., 2005) but now has spread to the Adriatic coasts (Dulčić & Dragičević, 2014), southern Italy (Azzurro et al ., 2014), Algeria (Kara et al ., 2015) and Spain (Rambla‐Alegre et al ., 2017). Pufferfish cause significant problems during traditional fishing and are threating native species in the Mediterranean leading to significant economic loss (Coro et al ., 2018).…”
