First record of an invasive Lessepsian migrant, Lagocephalus sceleratus (Actinopterygii: Tetraodontiformes: Tetraodontidae), in the Sea of Marmara

Abstract: Abstract. One specimen of the silver-cheeked toadfi sh, Lagocephalus sceleratus (Gmelin, 1789), was obtained for fi rst time from the Sea of Marmara, off Gelibolu, by trammel net in October 2008. The morphological features of this species were examined. The presently reported fi nding also represents the second documented occurrence of a puffer fi sh in the Sea of Marmara.

“…Lagocephalus sceleratus, which commonly occur between seafloor depths of 18 and 100 m in the Indo-Pacific (Smith & Heemstra, 1986), colonized and became established rapidly in the coastal area of the Nile Delta (Halim & Rizkalla, 2011). From there it spread towards the Algerian coast, where it was found at a depth of bottom of 50-60 m (Kara et al, 2015), and towards the easternmost coast of Turkey up to the Dardanelles Strait in the Sea of Marmara (Irmak & Altinağaç, 2015;Artüz & Kubanç, 2015). The deepest location reported for L. sceleratus is a depth of 150 m in the Gulf of Antalya (Özbek et al, 2017).…”

“…Early studies on pufferfish focused mainly on initial reports on their first records (Bilecenoglu et al, 2006;Tuncer et al, 2008;Koç et al, 2011;Turan & Yağlıoğlu, 2011;Irmak & Altinağaç, 2015;Akyol & Aydın, 2016Çelik et al, 2018), length-weight relationships (Başusta et al, 2013a,b;Bilge et al, 2017), population growth (Aydın, 2011;Farrag et al, 2015), and biological parameters (Boustany et al, 2015) of a single species when studying the spatio-temporal distribution of the pufferfish (Kalogirou, 2013;Farrag et al, 2015;El-Haweet et al, 2016;Özbek et al, 2017). “…The silver-cheeked toadfish, L. sceleratus, was reported for the first time from the Aegean Sea, Gökova Bay, in February 2003 (Filiz and Er, 2004). Later, the species of Pufferfish was also recorded in the Çanakkale Strait (Sea of Marmara) between 2007 and 2008 (Tuncer et al, 2008;Irmak and Altinagac, 2015).…”

“…The species was first recorded in 2003 in Gokova Bay of Turkey (Akyol et al 2005). Soon afterwards, the species established abundant populations along the coasts of nearly, if not all, the Mediterranean countries (Akyol et al 2005;Golani and Levy 2005;Golani and Azzurro 2007;Kasapidis et al 2007;Rilov and Galil 2009;Türker-Çakır et al 2009;EastMed 2010;Kalogirou et al 2010;Halim and Rizkalla 2011;Torcu-Koç et al 2011;Yaglioglu et al 2011;Jribi and Bradai 2012;Milazzo et al 2012;Nader et al 2012;Başusta et al 2013;Beköz et al 2013;Kalogirou 2013;Azzurro et al 2014;Ben Souissi et al 2014;Dulčić et al 2014;Sulić-Šprem et al 2014;Tiralongo and Tibullo 2014;Tunçer and Önal 2014;Deidun et al 2015;Irmak and Altınağaç 2015;Kara et al 2015;El-Haweet et al 2016;Akyol and Ünal 2017;Carbonara et al 2017;Ünal and Göncüoğlu-Bodur 2017).…”
