Randomized Prospective Study to Compare Laparoscopic Appendectomy Versus Umbilical Single-Incision Appendectomy

Abstract: The transumbilical single-port approach is seen as a feasible technique for performing appendectomy. It does not increase the rate of complications and represents a possible alternative to conventional laparoscopic appendectomy.

“…In terms of general surgery including appendectomy or cholecystectomy, recent several studies have reported that SILS is feasible and has similar surgical outcome without increasing significant complication (7)(8)(9)(10). In terms of malignancy of digestive tract, SILS has been eagerly investigated in colorectal cancer and showed comparable outcome in a few studies including randomized clinical trial…”

“…And some studies showed post op pain to be increased in SILA. 12 Hence our technique could be a simple alternative to the glove port technique with better results in operative time, pain scores, hospital stay and cosmesis.…”

“…11 Kang et al in another study concluded that other than a marginal increase in operative time in SILA (0.276) all the other variables were quite comparable. 12 The glove port technique although cost effective could considerably increase operative time as it has a steep learning curve, and surgeons require high technical skills to perform it. And some studies showed post op pain to be increased in SILA.…”

“…Dolores et al reported that significant difference was observed for postoperative pain with less pain reported in single incision group. 1 Jieding at al reported that single incision laparoscopy surgery has the advantage of less post-operative pain when compare with conventional laparoscopy group. 2 Kye at al reported that pain score on the visual analog scale on postoperative Day 1 was significantly lower in the single-incision group than in the three-port group.…”

“…1 Single incision laparoscopic surgery is a major breakthrough in minimally invasive surgeries, involving access to the abdomen through a specialized port or through an incision which appears single externally but fascially has multiple punctures. 2 The prospective comparisons of single incision and conventional laparoscopy are lacking.…”
