Randomized clinical trial on the effect of a multispecies probiotic on visceroperception in hypersensitive IBS patients

Abstract: In this placebo-controlled trial in IBS patients with visceral hypersensitivity, no significant effect of a multispecies probiotic on viscerperception was observed. The study has been registered in the US National Library of Medicine (http://www.clinicaltrials.gov, NCT00702026).

“…Furthermore, relatively homogenous IBS patients were specifically selected for this study based on the presence of rectal hypersensitivity using rectal barostat results. 1 Interestingly in this study, the authors observed symptoms of flatulence, bloating and abdominal cramping improved in placebo group, but not in probiotic group, and they assumed that the presence of some strains in the probiotic mixture may have contributed to an increased gas production and thereby to an increase in gas-related symptoms.…”

“…Conversely, a recent randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial on modulation of visceroperception (using rectal barostat measurement) by a mixture of six probiotics, showed no benefit versus placebo and the median thresholds for pain, urge, and discomfort did not differ significantly before and after treatment in the two groups (Ludidi et al, 2014).…”

“…The mechanisms involved in the development of pain symptoms are complex and both central and peripheral mechanisms play a role, with some IBS patients showing most changes in central nervous system processing, and others peripheral modifications. Conversely, in a placebo-controlled trial on IBS patients with known visceral hypersensitivity, no significant effect of a multispecies probiotic on visceroperception was observed (Ludidi et al, 2014).
