Random Poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐styrene) Brushes by ATRP to Create Neutral Surfaces for Block Copolymer Self‐Assembly

Abstract: Random copolymer brushes of styrene and methyl methacrylate (MMA) on silicon wafers by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) are synthesized using CuCl/CuCl2/HMTETA. It is found that with increasing amount of styrene the thickness of the brush layer could no longer be well controlled by the amount of free (sacrificial) initiator in the reaction. At constant concentration of free initiator a constant thickness is obtained for various ratios of MMA to styrene. Within 30–70% MMA in the monomer feed the comp… Show more

“…[20][21][22] The structure and composition of the resulting copolymer are studied in detail, and the self-assembly process and morphology transition are also discussed. To enhance the application of the polymeric micelles, the controlled release of coumarin 102 under single and combined stimulation is investigated to some extent.…”

“…ATRP has been successfully used to synthesize the well-defined polymer-silicon hybrids. [14][15][16][17][18] Reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT)-mediated polymerization is an alternative method in the controlled free-radical polymerization. It involves a reversible addition-fragmentation cycle where the transfer of a dithioester moiety between the active and dormant species maintains the controlled feature of the polymerization process.…”

“…17A shows an ATRP initiator except it has no silane head group meaning that it will not form a monolayer and stay in solution. 242,255,259 Polymers formed in solution can be analysed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), or size exclusion chromatography 124,246,255,260,261 to calculate the degree of polymerisation. The polymers formed via free initiators are shown to correlate well with surface attached initiators.…”
