Sustainable furniture design has emerged as a prominent area of research, focusing on the interrelationships among people, furniture, and the environment. Despite being in its nascent stage, this field has garnered attention from scholars across disciplinary boundaries, seeking to explore new opportunities for industrial development and innovative perspectives. The objective of this paper is to clarify the extent of the current research literature, present the current significant themes, and elaborate further on the developed and potential future research directions in sustainable furniture design. In this research, a systematic analysis of bibliometric performance and scientific mapping of literature on sustainable furniture design was carried out by examining 1578 published papers from 2002 to 2023 selected from the Web of Science database, utilizing BibliometrixR package, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace tools for the analysis. The findings indicate a marked increase in research output in this area since 2012, with China being the primary contributor, although not achieving the highest citation rates. Furthermore, the study identifies 713 instances of international collaborations among researchers from 81 countries, with China and the United States being the most frequent partners. The research direction of highly cited literature, journals with the most published papers on sustainable furniture design, and authors with high total citation rates indicate a prominent connection between sustainable furniture design and fields such as product technical science, environmental science, ecology, and material research. The analysis of co-citation and keywords reveals the evolution of research themes, these key issues include furniture-human body scale match, furniture structure and performance, lifecycle, carbon emissions reduction, furniture industry chain, artificial intelligence, new development, school furniture safety and quality, and furniture strength and load capacity, with the focus shifting from the ontology of furniture and the human body to the external scope, emphasizing the connection with life, the environment, and the future. The latest research highlights industry chains, artificial intelligence, and innovative development, reflecting the trends of future research topics as “multi-dimensional integration”, “health and intelligence”, and “environment and system” will be the direction for the next stage.

The purpose of the research is to identify professionally important qualities of the specialists in design, technology, and service, in particular cutters in the postmodern society. At the first stage, a preliminary list of 39 professionally important qualities of the skilled workers in the fashion industry has been formulated by means of theoretical analysis. The list considers the specifics of the cutter`s work at the intersection of three industries – design, technology, and service. At the second stage, a priori ranking of factors has been conducted by interviewing 5 experts. The list, reduced after a priori ranking, has become a basis for surveying 246 respondents from different groups of stakeholders (teachers, students, graduates of vocational schools, employers` representatives) at the third stage. As a result, the lists of input parameters of the model of specialist, which are professionally important qualities of the skilled cutters, are obtained. The lists contain 28 professionally important personal qualities, which are grouped into the following groups: executive and motor manifestations, cognitive processes, memory and thinking, emotions, business qualities, creative features, specific requirements. The obtained results make it possible to develop optimal prognostic models of training the skilled workers in the fashion industry, as well as to conduct a scientifically grounded selection of personnel and career counseling.

Urban furniture is a multifaceted object shaped by several factors such as user needs, social structure, urban pattern, geographical characteristics, economy, technology, and material. As an interface connecting user to the city, urban furniture contributes to the construction of an urban identity, have placemaking power and support public activities. Although the urban furniture is subject to design in different disciplines, multidisciplinary studies to urban furniture design are very limited and the definition and range of urban furniture is not clear. Buildings such as kiosks are evaluated as urban furniture by decision makers such as municipalities who mostly expect design alternatives without defining clear design expectations or evaluation criteria. This research proposes a multidisciplinary model to urban furniture design as an analytical design method. The proposed model has three stages before furniture design: "defining and evaluating design criteria", "Classification of urban furniture based on the criteria scores" and "Creating urban furniture design matrix combining criteria evaluation, furniture clusters, local characteristics, and summarize design concept, keywords, form and material characteristics for furniture design". Based on this model, a design matrix for Ordu city is prepared and one of urban furniture design example is presented here. 10 main and 84 sub-criteria graded based on 30 furniture types via interdisciplinary workshop with 16 professional participants. This research reveals that differences in the urban furniture design approaches and evaluation criteria of different disciplines exist. The proposed model integrates multi-disciplinary approach, local characteristics, furniture clusters which is a new classification based on criteria scores.
