Biophilic design is developed in urban planning concepts for cities—in line with sustainable development. A case study of converting a former paper mill in Nanterre into a university campus showed what factors influence the emergence of the biophilic form. The research informs the planning and design mechanisms and directs attention to the process. As a result, the study demonstrates that biophilic elements from the place-based pattern group are directly related to in-depth environmental analysis—similar to elements from the nature-based and element-based pattern groups. Together they result in a biophilic form. The element of creation is also present in the design process but is not the primary determinant of the choice of a design approach. In part, the form is adapted to the area's environmental characteristics, which result from their interaction with objective determinants. Nevertheless, the implementation is not devoid of compositional, creative, and cultural elements—that is, it assumes the features of biophilic architecture. This fact proves that the environment can influence the creative potential in architecture and urban studies.

Progressing climate change significantly affects the quality of life in cities. The related changes in the rainfall structure lead to an increased frequency of extreme hydrological phenomena such as droughts and floods. The increasing intensity of rainfall is a particular threat to urbanised areas, where due to the high degree of area sealing, an increase in runoff volumes and peak flow rate is observed. Storm water drainage systems are often not adapted to accommodate increased rainwater flows, which leads to the so-called urban floods. On the other hand, prolonged periods without precipitation may, in turn, lead to periodic water shortages. Cities must implement a climate change adaptation strategy. One of the solutions for rational rainwater management is the implementation of Blue-Green Infrastructure. These facilities are a modern solution supporting the sewage networks operation, water retention, and improving the quality of life in cities. The article presents the literature review on the current state of knowledge about Blue-Green Infrastructure and the implementation stage of these solutions in the world. Solutions that are newly introduced, not necessarily newly invented, in many places around the world are described. The literature review was limited to the period 2018–2023 to indicate the most modern and up-to-date strategies.

Over the past 30 years, water security issue in Chinese cities has become increasingly serious, largely due to rapid urbanization, population growth and disproportionate investment in water infrastructure. Urban rainwater harvesting (URWH), a household and community-level rainwater management measure, has been widely used during this period. This study provides a critical review of the policies, methods, technology, construction, implementation and benefits related to URWH in China. We show that URWH in China has gone through three phases over the past 30 years: an initial development phase, a rapid development phase and a sponge city construction phase. URWH research has focused mainly on rainwater harvesting, storage, utilization, management and other technologies, with limited attention to policy and benefit analysis. However, the scale of URWH construction and implementation in China remains small and needs further development. Currently, while URWH assessments cover social, ecological and environmental benefits, the economic benefits need to be further strengthened. The next step in URWH implementation should be to strengthen research and development of policy, legal and design standards. This study provides guidance for the implementation of URWH in Chinese cities and other cities alike in developing countries.
