The study of rainfall variability is important to reveal the detailed characteristics of the precipitation system under climate change. The variation in monsoon rainfall during 1991–2015 in the northwestern hydrological zone in Bangladesh, which includes the Bogura, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, and Pabna meteorological stations, was analyzed to examine the past trend, arrival, and withdrawal pattern, and shifting of monsoon rainfall. The annual total rainfall and monsoon rainfall were analyzed to evaluate their trend using a statistical model called MAKESENS. Approximately 71–78% of the total rainfall occurred during the monsoon season at all stations. Rangpur was the rainiest station (2193 mm/year) and Rajshahi was the driest station (1394 mm/year). There was a decreasing trend of annual rainfall at most of the stations. The arrival and withdrawal days of the monsoon rainfall at all stations were highly variable; the arrival day varied between 1 May and 23 August, and the withdrawal day varied between 19 August and 27 October. The monsoon arrived early by 2 to 39 days and late by 1 to 72 days from the reference day (1 May). The withdrawal of monsoon rainfall occurred 1 to 38 days early and 1 to 39 days late from the reference day. The shifting of the monsoon did not reveal any significant pattern. The results of this study can be used to plan and manage agricultural practices at the local level of the northwestern Bangladesh.

Spatiotemporal variability of rainfall linked to ground water level under changing climate in northwestern region, Bangladesh

Bangladesh is one of the most climatic hazard-prone countries in the world. Rainfall in Bangladesh is highly variable which depends on each season and location. This study aims to investigate spatiotemporal variability of rainfall linked to groundwater level under changing climate in the northwestern region, Bangladesh during the period of 1976-2016 using rainfall and groundwater level data. A number of statistical approaches such as Mann-Kendall (MK) test, linear regression model, Sen’s slope estimator and Spearman’s rho (SK) test, Coefficient of Variation (CV) were employed to reveal trends and variability of rainfall and groundwater level. Additionally, wavelet transform was applied to assess temporal variability of rainfall time series in the northwestern region, Bangladesh. The results show that the annual rainfall variability was the highest in the Ishwardi station (25.39%) and the lowest was found in Rajshahi (20.70%). The MK test results reveal that the trends of annual and seasonal rainfall decreased gradually, where the highest significant decreasing trend of annual rainfall was found in Rajshahi (-2.976 mm/year) and the lowest decreasing trend was found in Syedpur (-1.278 mm/year). Furthermore, monsoon and winter seasons represent the decreasing trends of rainfall for all the stations. The results of wavelet analysis demonstrate that the monthly rainfall variance of average rainfall in the northwestern region was low from the period of 2006 to 2014, indicating the dry years. The annual and seasonal rainfall trends in the northwestern region were decreased, particularly in the recent decade. The relationship between rainfall and groundwater level indicates that rainfall was decreased and the ground water level was also declining at the same time in the study region. Interestingly, it is observed that a significant high decreasing trend of annual rainfall is found in Rangpur but the annual groundwater level depth is less increased in Rangpur at the same time.

Detecting fine-scale spatiotemporal land use changes is a prerequisite for understanding and predicting the effects of urbanization and its related human impacts on the ecosystem. Land use changes are frequently examined using vegetation indices (VIs), although the validation of these indices has not been conducted at a high resolution. Therefore, a hierarchical classification was constructed to obtain accurate land use types at a fine scale. The characteristics of four popular VIs were investigated prior to examining the hierarchical classification by using Purbachal New Town, Bangladesh, which exhibits ongoing urbanization. These four VIs are the normalized difference VI (NDVI), green-red VI (GRVI), enhanced VI (EVI), and two-band EVI (EVI2). The reflectance data were obtained by the IKONOS (0.8-m resolution) and WorldView-2 sensor (0.5-m resolution) in 2001 and 2015, respectively. The hierarchical classification of land use types was constructed using a decision tree (DT) utilizing all four of the examined VIs. The accuracy of the classification was evaluated using ground truth data with multiple comparisons and kappa (κ) coefficients. The DT showed overall accuracies of 96.1 and 97.8% in 2001 and 2015, respectively, while the accuracies of the VIs were less than 91.2%. These results indicate that each VI exhibits unique advantages. In addition, the DT was the best classifier of land use types, particularly for native ecosystems represented by Shorea forests and homestead vegetation, at the fine scale. Since the conservation of these native ecosystems is of prime importance, DTs based on hierarchical classifications should be used more widely.
