Rainfall timing and runoff: The influence of the criterion for rain event separation

Abstract: Rain is not uniform in time and space in semiarid areas and its distribution is very important for the runoff process. Hydrological studies usually divide rainfall into events. However, defining rain events is complicated, and rain characteristics vary depending on how the events are delimited. Choosing a minimum inter-event time (MIT) is a commonly used criterion. Our hypothesis is that there will be an optimal MIT that explains the maximum part of the variance of the runoff, with time to runoff used as a sur… Show more

“…This finding could be explained by the fresh surface material collected in a possible recent rainfall event that did not connect the sediment and water from this part of the slope to the lowest position. This could be an example of the rainfall pulses that are characteristic of soil erosion events (short time), which transport some material a few meters but do not connect with the lower part of the slope (Brierley et al, 2006;Cavalli et al, 2013;Fryirs et al, 2007;Molina-Sanchis et al, 2016).…”

“…28.2018 The basic data was the hourly rainfall intensity which was calculated from the cumulative rainfall over time. A series of sequential data obtained from the stations which was divided into independent rainfall events, using two definitions: inter-event time definition and the effective rainfall definition [18,27]. An effective rainfall standard for a rainfall event was amended for Wenchuan earthquake area [28].…”
