Rainfall rate retrieval in presence of path attenuation using C-band polarimetric weather radars

Abstract: Abstract.Weather radar systems are very suitable tools for the monitoring of extreme rainfall events providing measurements with high spatial and temporal resolution over a wide geographical area. Nevertheless, radar rainfall retrieval at C-band is prone to several error sources, such as rain path attenuation which affects the accuracy of inversion algorithms. In this paper, the so-called rain profiling techniques (namely the surface reference method FV and the polarimetric method ZPHI) are applied to correct … Show more

“…More sophisticated approaches (Vulpiani et al 2006) will probably provide a more accurate correction of Z H and Z DR and could give better rainfall estimations. This is a useful and practical simplification in a real-time framework, but it could lead to a bad attenuation estimation in certain meteorological situations.…”

“…However, the presented stochastic simulator of rainfall microstructure also provides a potential test bed for multi-parameter attenuation correction techniques (e.g., Illingworth et al, 2000;Testud et al, 2000;Vulpiani et al, 2005Vulpiani et al, , 2006a. Moreover, a stochastic rainfall model which explicitly treats the spatial and/or temporal variations of raindrop size distributions could also be relevant for several other hydrological applications, e.g.…”
