Rain resistance of façades with façade details: A summary of three field and laboratory studies

Abstract: One of the main functions of the exterior walls and fac xades is to protect the indoor and the sensitive parts of construction from the outdoor climate. Exposure of driving rain is the most prominent moisture source a wall has to resist. Despite this, there is a lack of information on rain resistance. Field measurements on real-life external walls show that recurrent water leakage under driving rain conditions is observed in five out of seven new-built houses in Sweden, including those with ventilated fac xade… Show more

“…Cracks regularly exist at the interface between brick and mortar which can act as preferential flow path for moisture into masonry (Olsson, 2018). A fracture flow model is needed to predict moisture distribution and transport in masonry wall with cracks (Michel and Pease, 2018;Roels et al, 2003).…”

“…Complementary laboratory studies have been carried out to study how the water droplets enter different types of holes and slits and how different conditions such as pressure difference, the shape of the opening, surface material and dams affect the leakage. (Olsson 2018a, Olsson 2018b.…”

“…The latest research in Sweden confirms the statements in ASHRAE Standard 160, which state that façades are normally not completely rainproof (ASHRAE, 2016) and should be considered in moisture calculations (Olsson, 2017b). In addition, there is no reliable theoretical risk analysis tool to assess the moisture resistance of new façade solutions and of renovation solutions (Bednar & Hagentoft, 2015).…”
