Railway System Accessibility Evaluation for Wheelchair Users: Case Study in the Czech Republic

Abstract: This paper deals with accessibility of rail transportation as a system. Presented methods bring ways of rail infrastructure and train accessibility evaluation. Applied two-stage model enables evaluation of departure halls accessibility. The level of train accessibility is defined by coefficients of time and direction non-uniformity. While opportunities for barrier-free travelling are relatively balanced in monitored regions, coefficients show a time imbalance in the results. Opportunity to travel barrier-free … Show more

“…However, the railway platform height according to Czech Standards is 550 mm above the track level (Matuška 2017). If there is a mixed service with conventional railway vehicles and some of the platforms must be shared with both service layers, 2-section platforms with different heights (550 and 350 mm) are recommended.…”

“…There are several types of vehicles that differ from each other according to their key parameters. With the exclusion of middle-floor and high-floor vehicles that do not seem to meet the current accessibility standards despite their preservation in the current railway operation in Olomouc Region (Matuška 2017), there are 3 main length categories:…”

“…This helps rail transport to compete with other modes of transport. Matuška [14] examined the accessibility of rail transport by providing ways to assess the accessibility of railway infrastructure and trains. He applied a two-step model to assess the availability of departure halls.…”
