RAFT “grafting-through” approach to surface-anchored polymers: Electrodeposition of an electroactive methacrylate monomer

Abstract: Abstract. The synthesis of homopolymer and diblock copolymers on surfaces was demonstrated using electrodeposition of a methacrylate-functionalized carbazole dendron and subsequent reversible additionfragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) "grafting-through" polymerization. First, the anodically electroactive carbazole dendron with methacrylate moiety (G1CzMA) was electrodeposited over a conducting surface (i.e. gold or indium tin oxide (ITO)) using cyclic voltammetry (CV). The electrodeposition process formed a c… Show more

“…[1][2][3] As against conventional radical polymerization, CRP method allows synthesis of polymers with controlled molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution, and desired molecular architecture. [4][5][6][7][8][9] Among various CRP approaches, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has been widely studied in the past decade because of its unique advantages such as adaptability to most monomers, topological molecular architectures (e.g. comb-like, star-like, telechelic and gradient polymers), and many commercially available ATRP initiators.…”

“…The RAFT agent 61 is a poor RAFT agent and does not provide control over MMA polymerization, yet free poly(MMA) obtained under these conditions was reported to have a very narrow dispersity. [634] The process of formation of polymers containing active ester functionality or pyridyl disulfide functionality as substrates for 'grafting to processes' (see above) might also be considered as examples of 'grafting through' processes.…”

“…The methacrylate functionalized silica NPs were subjected to radical grafting reaction with prepared O‐xanthate end PVI produced by RAFT procedure (Scheme ) . All coupling reaction were conducted during 70 hr at 60°C in ethanol using AIBN as radical source (0.04 and 0.16 wt%, respectively).…”
