Radular myoglobin and protein variation within and among some littorinid species (Mollusca: Gastropoda)

Abstract: The radular muscles of several littorinid species, including Littorina littorea, L. saxatilis, L. obtusata, L. striata and Melarhaphe neritoides, contain myoglobin (Mb). Here we report on the presence of radular Mb in eight other littorinids: L. compressa, L. arcana, L. fabalis, Nodilittorina punctata, N. trochoides, N. radiata, Littoraria undulata and Littoraria cingulifera. Using native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) and isoelectric focusing (IEF) we compared the Mb and soluble protein (SP) profil… Show more

“…The morphological data set of Reid (1996) was updated and extended with data for the non-Littorina species (see Tables 4 and 5). In addition, data on radular myoglobin profiles obtained by isoelectric focusing (IEF) (Medeiros et al 1998) and features of the secondary structure of the 18S rRNA molecule were added to the morphological data set. We did not consider previously published allozyme data because such data are lacking for Littoraria undulata and N. punctata from the Cape Verde Islands.…”

“…In addition to morphological characters, two characters of the secondary structure of the 18S rRNA molecule (length of helix 10 and structure of the terminal helix part of E10-1; Fig. 2), as well as a qualitative assessment of IEF radular myoglobin profiles (Medeiros et al, 1998) are included. Figure 4A shows a tree length distribution on the basis of the characters of Table 4.…”

“…Despite the large size variation observed in the intron sequences of some species, this was considered a promising approach to analyze genetic variability and to identify species in this genus. Importantly, Mb sequences were employed in studies of systematics and population genetics of mollusks of different classes, in which the structural role of different polymorphisms in these proteins were investigated (Dewilde et al, 1998;Medeiros et al, 1998;Suzuki et al, 2003a, b;Lieb et al, 2006). Recently, the molecular and biochemical characterization of the myoglobin of the Brazilian species Biomphalaria was performed (Teixeira et al, 2011).…”
